Household name OpenAI has lost over $540 million in 2022, which is double the amount they lost in the previous year. The majority of these losses are attributed to the development of ChatGPT. Despite the significant financial loss, OpenAI plans to continue investing in ChatGPT and other AI technologies, citing long-term benefits and potential revenue streams.

How did they lose so much? The development of the chatbot was not only costly, but also time-consuming, with the model requiring extensive amounts of computational power and resources. Another probable reason is OpenAI’s decision to open-source the model, which although has led to its widespread use, led to high costs associated with its development and upkeep.

These struggles have led to concerns about the future of the company and the industry as a whole. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman remains optimistic about their long-term prospects making reference to the growing demand for AI technologies.

Microsoft is set to introduce Copilot, its AI-powered productivity tool, to SharePoint. Copilot can help users develop their existing document or presentation into a page that uses SharePoint’s high-quality design visuals. Another feature is that it can help users rewrite essential text passages on the page to suit the tone and angle of the intended audience.

The new SharePoint start page includes templates that connect the intranet to a business’s communication needs. They’re also adding a brand centre, where users can specify fonts and colours among other design elements essential to a user’s business and product/service.

Users of Copilot in SharePoint will only need to describe in words the type of site or page that they will want to see. This is what Adam Harmetz, vice president of program management for Microsoft’s collaborative apps and platforms had to say: “If you can describe the site or page, Copilot in SharePoint will begin to create it for you, and then work with you to edit and refine it. And all within our existing commitments to data security and privacy in the enterprise.”

Pretty exciting stuff if you’re a avid user of SharePoint.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has warned about the potential negative impact of artificial intelligence (AI), saying it could make scams and misinformation harder to detect.

Speaking to the BBC, he expressed concern that the technology could be used by "bad actors" to deceive people. Wozniak said that AI-generated content should be clearly labelled and that the sector required regulation. He had previously signed a letter alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk in March calling for a halt to the development of the most powerful AI models.

While Wozniak acknowledges the benefits of AI, he believes it will make bad actors even more convincing as programs like ChatGPT can create text that "sounds so intelligent." He believes that responsibility for anything generated by AI should rest with those who publish it and that regulation should hold big tech firms accountable.

However, Wozniak remains sceptical that regulators will get it right, as the forces that drive for profit usually win out. Despite his concerns, Wozniak does not believe AI will replace people because it lacks emotion. Instead, he says that people must be better educated to spot fraud and malicious attempts to obtain personal information.
