📰 NEWS
🌏️ Microsoft’s AI PC time has arrived
Microsoft has just unveiled a groundbreaking change to Windows keyboards by introducing the Copilot key, marking the most significant keyboard alteration in the last three decades. The company has dubbed 2024 as the "AI PC" era. A novel key, styled after the Windows logo, will activate the Copilot experience within Windows, facilitating seamless interaction with Microsoft's AI assistant. The purpose of the new key is to streamline the integration of AI into daily tasks, adapting to the increasing personalization and intelligence of technology.
This update is set to roll out on new Windows 11 devices starting in late February, including upcoming Microsoft Surface devices.
The introduction of the Copilot key underscores Microsoft's commitment to making AI assistants widespread and easily accessible across its range of devices. This move likely represents just the beginning of a broader wave of AI enhancements throughout its product lineup.
💬 The New York Times VS AI
The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, claiming copyright infringement related to the alleged unauthorized use of millions of Times articles for training AI systems such as ChatGPT.
The media outlet asserts that its content was copied verbatim without permission for the training of ChatGPT and for use in Microsoft's Bing search engine.
This legal action coincides with reports that OpenAI is in discussions to secure funding at a $100 billion valuation from investors. The NYT mentions that previous negotiations with Microsoft and OpenAI in April failed to reach an agreement on the usage of its articles. OpenAI has recently entered into agreements with Axel Springer (owner of Politico and Business Insider) and the Associated Press for news content.
This lawsuit will serve as a test for the legal boundaries concerning AI's utilization of copyrighted news content without permission – akin to a Napster moment for large language models (LLMs). If the NYT prevails, it could compel tech giants to establish content deals and potentially slow down advancements in AI, posing a significant challenge to the future of ChatGPT.
🧠 INSIGHTS
👁️ AI Mindreading
Scientists at the University of Technology Sydney have developed a new technology called DeWave, capable of converting silent thoughts into text using an EEG cap that records brain activity.
DeWave goes beyond speech; it has the potential to enable individuals to control advanced devices such as robotic arms or robots solely through their thoughts.
Moreover, it's already showing promising results! In a trial involving 29 participants who thought about what they read, DeWave successfully interpreted their thoughts correctly 40% of the time—an impressive starting point!
