Widely known as the ‘godfather’ of AI, Geoffrey Hinton has resigned from Google. His warning about the potential dangers of AI is no small matter. It’s as if the ‘godfather’ has sent a warning to the tech world, saying “I’m leaving this place, and you should all sleep with one eye open.”

But on a serious note, his comments highlight the need for continue research and regulation in the field of AI, so that the potential risks are adequately addressed. He mentioned that some of the dangers were “quite scary” and that “Right now, they’re not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. but I think they soon may be.”

Hinton also referred to “bad actors” who would try to use AI for “bad things”, hinting at how they might give robots the ability to create their own sub-goals. He came to the conclusion that the kind of intelligence that we are developing is very different from the intelligence we have.

Microsoft is rolling out their new AI-powered version of its Bing search engine to all users. If you remember a few months ago, (three to be exact), we saw Microsoft debut a preview of its new Bing powered by ChatGPT. They’re finally opening it up to all users without a waitlist allowing more people to access via the Edge browser.

Microsoft’s new AI technology has sparked concerns about the accuracy and tone of its responses, with some users receiving emotionally reactive and aggressive responses. Despite this, Microsoft is committed to moving forward with the product, with the goal of continuously improving its speed, accuracy, and quality. Bing now boasts over 100 million daily active users, a significant increase in the past few months, according to Microsoft’s VP, Yusuf Mehdi.

Microsoft also mentioned that they have plans to bring ChatGPT technology to its core productivity tools, meaning Word, Excel, and Outlook will all be seeing changes. Something to look forward to as an avid user myself.

Earlier today, the Biden administration held a press call in which a senior official announced new initiatives to promote responsible innovation and mitigate risks associated with artificial intelligence. To achieve this goal, the administration will invest $140 million to create seven new National AI Research Institutes.

The administration will also be meeting with major AI companies' CEOs to discuss the risks of AI development in the current and near future. These companies have committed to participate in an independent public evaluation of their AI systems at DEF CON 31, the world's largest hacker convention.

The press call concluded by emphasizing the importance of responsible innovation and ensuring that AI improves people's lives without compromising their rights and safety.
