Berlin-based artist Boris Eldagsen caused a stir in the art world when he declined a prestigious art prize and revealed that his winning image had been generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Eldagsen received the top honor in the Sony World Photography Awards for his captivating black and white photograph titled "The Electrician," part of his Pseudomnesia series. The image, reminiscent of a 1940s family portrait, depicts two women from different generations.

During the award ceremony in London, Eldagsen returned the prize but expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the significance of his achievement as the first AI-generated image to win in a prestigious international photography competition. His intention was not to deceive the judges but rather to ignite a dialogue about the role of AI art in the field of photography. Eldagsen believes that AI-generated art should be recognized as distinct from traditional photography, suggesting the need for a new term to classify it.

To create his AI images, Eldagsen feeds multiple text prompts into an AI photo generator program, describing various elements such as the scene, lighting, composition, and colors. He likens this process to following a recipe. However, he chooses not to disclose the exact prompts used for "The Electrician." Eldagsen argues that recent instances of fake, hyper-realistic AI-generated images have unfairly tainted the reputation of AI creations.

Photography curator Deborah Klochko from San Diego supports Eldagsen's work and challenges the definition of photography itself, emphasizing its continuous evolution since its inception. She contends that AI-generated images should be regarded as art and suggests that skepticism about their artistic merit may stem from resistance to change. Klochko raises important questions about ownership and the evolving legal landscape surrounding AI art copyright.

While Eldagsen's experience with the World Photography Awards indicates that the art world may not fully embrace AI imagery yet, the influential Gagosian gallery in New York is currently showcasing AI artworks by Oscar-nominated director Bennett Miller. Klochko expresses openness to exhibiting AI works alongside traditional photography, underscoring the significance of fostering discussions and understanding rather than resorting to censorship or demonization.
